In certain people, their gums may appear too big when they flash a smile, and it makes their teeth appear smaller. The reasons for this may vary, and include hereditary conditions and modern lifestyles.

Gum contouring is a procedure in which a dental specialist works with special laser equipment and techniques to contour the gum surrounding the teeth in such a way that the visible disproportionate gum versus teeth appearance presented in a smile or during speaking is reduced to acceptable levels, by suitably trimming overgrown gum tissue with laser treatment. Typically, the excess gum tissue is identified by the dentist who then trims it away using a special laser

In some cases, it may be looked upon as a Cosmetic Dentistry procedure that is done as part of Smile Design, even when there is nothing wrong with the actual teeth. In other cases, it may be taken up as part of Mouth Restoration treatment.
